A midday look ahead in preparation for economic reports and events scheduled for the next trading day.
Highlights: The new week brings a renewed pace to the economic calendar. It begins with Monday’s pre-open report, albeit a normally non-influential report, and then followed by a high-profile post-open report.

Highlights: Friday’s calendar is the trickiest to navigate, and that’s not saying much for this otherwise slow economic week. FOMC had to leak and pre-release its Minutes to liven things up earlier. Two pre-open reports are announced simultaneously, looking at both ends of the spectrum, from industrial to retail. And that retail data is of continued interest as consumer health is suspicious. Speaking of which, the post-open reports similarly look at both ends of the spectrum, albeit staggered by 5 minutes in between.

Highlights: This week’s calendar is slow. So, Thursday’s calendar seems busy, but it’s not. Jobless Claims tends to influence price action, at least temporarily. The 30-year auction usually inhibits price action before its results. If there is any difficulty with it — there being so little other economic news — the reaction could be substantial.

Highlights: While more post-close quarterly earnings might otherwise inhibit late-afternoon volatility, FOMC Minutes has a similar influence prior to its mid-afternoon release. The resulting price action could resemble two defribillator shocks administered to no pulse.

Highlights: Tuesday’s two pre-open retail metrics are becoming higher-profile as more attention turns to the consumer’s health and vigor. But end-o’quarter earnings garner attention, beginning after Monday’s close with Alcoa (AA) reporting.
